Episode Highlights

How Can Feedback From Others Help Us?

  • Feedback has the power to reinforce the strengths that we already have, clarify the consequences and effects of our behavior, and increase our ability to see where we’re going wrong on our own.

How Do We Take Feedback Constructively?

  • We have to put our pride to the side (easier said than done).
  • Underneath the emotional response lies the truth behind what this other person thinks about us in the situation.
  • Listening not to respond or defend ourselves but rather to hear what they are saying is a great way to grasp more than just the anger or frustration.

Do I Have to Take What They’re Saying Seriously?

  • Take everything with a grain of salt. If someone is upset with you, they may exaggerate how they actually feel in order to hurt you.
  • Take a step back, do our absolute best to think from our rational brain instead of our emotional brain, and try to digest what it is that we’re receiving as feedback.

What If I Disagree Completely?

  • Listen and make sure you understand exactly what it is they’re telling you.
  • Allow space for the other person to be heard if this is a connection you value.
  • When we overcome miscommunication, we may even be able to strengthen our relationship with this person we care about.

5 Powerful Quotes

  • “In a perfect world, we would be able to take criticism at its face value and not find offense in it, but we don’t live in a perfect world.”
  • “The power of feedback is that we can see things about ourselves from an outsider perspective. Sometimes, we hide things from ourselves.”
  • “Feedback has the power to reinforce the strengths that we already have, clarify the consequences and effects of our behavior, and increase our ability to see where we’re going wrong on our own.”
  • “When the feedback is coming from a connection that we value, the relationship can even strengthen as a result of overcoming a miscommunication.”
  • “Criticism has the power to make us lose our sense of self, our confidence, and our passion. But what if we stopped thinking about criticism as an inherently bad thing?”
