Episode Highlights

What is the Planning Fallacy?

  • This concept is basically a tendency to completely underestimate how long a project will take, even though similar projects that we’ve already completed have taken a significant amount of time in the past.
  • This unconscious inclination to estimate how long a project will take is why we fail to meet deadlines.

Why Are We Unsuccessful in Our Planning?

  • We aren’t being realistic about how long something may take. We don’t take into consideration all of the other variables in our lives.
  • We don’t give ourselves enough space to complete a project and just end up thinking we aren’t good enough when that couldn’t be further from the truth.

How Can We Improve Our Planning Skills?

  • Be more realistic about how long something is going to take. Consider if there will be multiple steps involved, if the project will need multiple drafts, or what obstacles you may encounter.
  • When you complete a project, do some reflecting. Ask yourself if everything went according to plan, what you can do differently next time, and how you can prepare better if you have to complete a project that is similar in the future.

5 Powerful Quotes

  • “Being overly optimistic can sometimes make us unrealistic about what we’re capable of.”
  • “This tendency to overextend ourselves and overestimate our abilities can be attributed to an inability to plan in such a way that allows us to reach our full potential.”
  • “We overwork ourselves until we reach the peak of emotional exhaustion.”
  • “When a big project fills us with dread as the deadline approaches, it’s natural to want to avoid it and complete smaller, less draining tasks.”
  • “Knowing what the worst thing to expect is can be very comforting. It helps us feel more prepared and less blindsided if things don’t go our way.”
