Episode Highlights

When Do You Know You Need Help?

  • Many of us wait until we are at our breaking point before seeking help, but you can ask for help at any moment of struggle in your life.
  • There doesn’t have to be one big defining moment in your life for you to be deserving of help. You always deserve to be cared for.

Why Is It So Hard To Ask For Help?

  • We fear what other people might think of us if they know we are struggling. We fear that they will judge us, assume that we are weak, or abandon us.
  • The truth is that no one is immune to struggling and everyone could benefit from getting help during a struggle.
  • You don’t deserve to go through things alone. You deserve a support system. If someone judges you for wanting help, they were never a part of your support system to begin with.

Why Do So Many People Struggle With Mental Health?

  • Lack of access to resources and stigma keep people from asking for help or being able to get it when they do ask.

What Do You Do When You’re Drowning in Negativity?

  • When things are continuously and exceptionally difficult, we may need some better coping skills. It isn’t your fault that life is difficult, but having better skills in your toolkit can help you navigate through the storm better.
  • Speaking with a medical professional can help you determine whether or not you need medication to treat a serious chemical imbalance in your brain. There is nothing wrong with this whatsoever. You can even seek out medical opinions from several doctors if you’d like.

Can’t I Just Google My Symptoms?

  • You know the answer to this one. There are so many articles out there about mental illness written by professionals and non-professionals alike.
  • It doesn’t hurt to seek out an online support community for people who go through what you go through. This is actually incredibly helpful.
  • However, you do deserve real professional help. If it’s available to you, please seek it out.

5 Powerful Quotes

  • “Societal expectations for us to be completely independent from one another and not need to get help can often inhibit us from reaching our true potential and having the quality of life that we deserve.”
  • “Many of us wait until we are at rock bottom but broadly speaking, we don’t need to be in the middle of a crisis to ask for help.”
  • “As a matter of fact, getting help as a form of maintenance even when things are going well in our lives can be a great way to remain resilient in the face of challenges that inevitably arise.”
  • “After all, mental health is something that we all have, regardless of whether or not we have a mental illness.”
  • “It’s not unusual to feel deeply unhappy, have negative thoughts, or experience anxiety. It’s the persistence, depth, and consistency of these negative feelings that set aside normal reactions from abnormal ones.”
