Always wanting to be in control of a situation is a natural response to chaos. Unfortunately, as we get older, we realize that it is impossible to gain total control over all forces in our lives.
In this episode, we talk about the act of letting go…of relinquishing control in a healthy way that acknowledges the active role we play in our own lives while still allowing us to be as flexible as is necessary.
Here are two reasons why you should listen to the full episode.
- Discover why we crave control as humans.
- Learn what it is you can actually control vs. what is uncontrollable.

Episode Highlights
Why Do We Always Feel Like We Need to Be in Control?
- It’s natural to want to have control over a situation. We desperately want to avoid negative outcomes and propel ourselves down the path that we think is right.
What Can We Control?
- In most instances, the only thing that we can control is our behavior. While this may not feel entirely true if we struggle with impulse control, our behavior is one of those things that we can learn to control better.
- We can also control how we think about a situation. In other words, the perspective that we choose to have when something happens to us is controllable.
What is Outside of Our Control?
- The behavior of others, environmental factors, disasters, and pretty much everything that has to do with life outside of your own behavior.
How Do We Improve Our Ability to Go With the Flow?
- Make a list of things in our life that we can actually control, such personal hygiene, nutrition choices, and level of productivity.
- Recognize the reason behind searching for control. What are you fearing? Why do you fear this? Consider doing a quick journaling exercise to gain a better understanding of the situation and of your feelings.
5 Powerful Quotes

- “When we feel out of control, we begin to grasp at straws and attempt to control any area of our life that we can. This may come in the form of restrictive diets, intense self-criticism, exercising until we drop, or trying to control other people in our lives.”
- “Wanting to control things doesn’t necessarily come from a negative place and it doesn’t necessarily lead to negative outcomes.”
- “Unfortunately, that list of things that we can control is significantly shorter than the list of things we can’t.”
