Episode Highlights

Why Do We Consume Caffeine?

  • Outside of the obvious energy boost we receive, we also experience withdrawal symptoms when we aren’t consuming it such as headaches, fatigue, general weakness, drowsiness, depression, and anxiety.
  • Many of us use it as an excuse to socialize. Ever had a friend ask if you wanted to catch up over a cup of coffee?

What Happens in Our Brain When We Consume Caffeine?

  • Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. When consumed, it interacts with adenosine which is a molecule in the brain that contributes to sleepiness.
  • Throughout the day, adenosine builds up in our brain so that, by the end of the day, we are tired enough to go to sleep.
  • Caffeine molecules are molecularly similar to adenosine molecules. When we put caffeine into our bodies, those caffeine molecules are taken up by the brain and block the reception of adenosine.

What Happens to Our Body When We Consume Caffeine?

  • Caffeine has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that attack free radicals, which are unstable atoms that contribute to illness and aging.
  • Some theories believe that coffee may help prevent Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Dementia. Research here is still developing, but the bottom line is that caffeine may have positive effects on memory.

5 Powerful Quotes

  • “None of us are immune to how ingrained coffee and caffeine consumption is in our society.”
  • “Almost anything could be discussed over a cup of coffee.”
  • “A recent meta-analysis found a 17-20% lower risk of Alzheimer’s in patients who regularly consumed a cup of coffee a day.”
  • “What we actually found among many sources is that caffeine and coffee, in general, is another one of those things that’s pretty good in moderation, but of course overdoing it can have some negative effects.”
  • “We know it’s hard, especially with deadlines and busy schedules, but in order to be our best selves, we need to rest to recharge!”
